The project

Making a landmark
work for two producers.

In 2018, producers Blake Mills and Tony Berg took over Sound City, the studio where Nirvana made Nevermind. Brandon handled the integration and wiring for Blake’s Studio A, helped move Tony’s Zeitgeist studio into Studio B, and designed Studio B’s acoustic treatment.

Tony had worked in the same room at Zeitgeist every day for thirty years, and the move only worked if Studio B felt like home. Brandon designed and installed new ceiling and wall treatment to bring the room’s sound closer to the one Tony knew.

In Studio A, he oversaw the installation and integration of a 1973 Neve 8036 leased from Avedis Kifedjian, then wired the room around it: a new patch bay for Blake’s outboard gear, rebuilt wiring to the live room mic panels and monitoring, and every other system the studio runs on. He also tied Sound City’s echo chambers and EMT plates into both rooms so they share them, and brought the control room’s George Augspurger main monitors back out of storage, restoring and reinstalling them to return the room to its original design.

In Studio B, he worked with Matt DelVecchio on the move, integrating Tony’s 1970 API console and outboard gear into the facility.

The rooms have been busy since. Bob Dylan recorded Rough and Rowdy Ways at Sound City with Blake in the band, and Blake has produced Perfume Genius’s Set My Heart on Fire Immediately and Marcus Mumford’s (self-titled) there. In Studio B, Tony has produced Phoebe Bridgers’ Punisher and Sarah McLachlan’s Better Broken.
